I start writing

I need to start writing. It has been a while since a singular story moved me in such a way that I feel confident. I feel confident enough right now to start writing this blog. This is big! I have big self esteem issues and have never considered writing a strong point. I wont even post my thoughts on social media. But I have no choice now but to write. The LLMs have arrived and I am genuinely afraid of losing my mental footing in this digital hurricane.

Here is my reaction to the The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas

It is a story about a perfect society whose perfect-ness depend completely and utterly on the abominable torture of an innocent child. The story is not about the child, though, but about the members of society who recognize the evil absurdity and attempt to leave it behind.

We are the people of Omelas. Ours is the society whos perfect-ness depends on the eternal suffering of innocent children. It is interesting how the bible reinforces this idea. The bible insists that the peaceful structure of our daily life depends upon the fact that one person “suffered and died for our sins.”

When they come of age, young Omelans are brought to the broom closet, where the single innocent child of about ten is locked in darkness and eternal suffering. They learn of the child’s existence. They learn that their happiness depends upon that child’s suffering.

We all carry these metaphorical broom closets in our pockets. We peer into the the realm of torture every day. I think Le Guinn would draw this comparison. What does “walking away” mean? Imagine yourself a character in that world. Surely we would imagine ourselves as one of the Omelans to walk away from the system.
